Access problems TONIGHT ONLY (Fri. Feb. 28th)  from 11PM to 3AM Sat.   includes ALL off-campus access to the databases through Research Port, the catalog, and the find-it service. It may also cause problems with the databases for patrons with on-campus access too. Thank you for your patience. They are performing maintenance on our systems tonight during off-peak hours. Dr. Dale Green Presents "The Hill: Uncovered..."

Free event for everyone!  Great opportunity to hear American history in the making. Join us in the Student Services Center Theatre on Feb. 20th at 5:30pm as Dr. Dale Green of Morgan State presents "The Hill: Uncovered...Lifting the Veil of Ignorance" Generously sponsored by Delmarva Power and hosted by the Library. This is a presentation on the potentially the earliest and largest settlement of free persons of color in America located in Easton, MD and dating back to 1790. It

will cover not only archaeology and African American genealogy, but also varied topics such as African American Methodism, free blacks, archival research, history etc. Something for everyone! Light refreshments follow the question and answer segment. We look forward to seeing you there!

African American Read-In Coming Soon!

coming on Wed. Feb. 19th from 8am to 11pm. is the popular African American Read-In event. The National event of the same name is in its 25th year!  Our version has UMES students only read a book by an African American student for at least an hour to receive a raffle ticket for a chance at aprize. The more hours you read, the more raffle tickets you earn! Easy Peasy and a good way to "get into" some great literature! See flyer below for more details or call the number on the flyer. Frederick Douglass Library is now open our regular semester hours:  

Monday-Thursday:  8:00 a.m.-12:00a.m.

Friday 8:00a.m.-5:00p.m.

Saturday 10:00a.m.-7:00p.m. and

Sunday 3:00p.m. to 12:00a.m.

Whether you need to use a computer, do research, do homework, use a group study room or just unwind between classes, we hope that you will make Frederick Douglass Library a regular part of your daily routine.

We are here to help! So, please, if you need any assistance, just ask!

Hours for the Summer Sessions, 2013

The first summer session starts on June 3, 2013. The Library will open from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm from Monday to Thursday, and from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on Fridays.

The Library will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Extended Hours for Final Exams, May 2013

The Library will open from 8:00 am to 2:00 am from Monday, May 6, through Thursday, May 9, 2013; and, from Monday, May 13, through Wednesday, May 15, 2013.

On Sunday, May 12, 2013, the Library will be open from 1:00 pm to 12:00 am.

Library opening hours for Friday, May 10, are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; and Saturday, May 11, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Citation Help for your papers

Getting final papers ready? The Frederick Douglass Library is offering a FREE session on ALA style citations on May 7th at 10:30-11:30am and a FREE session on MLA style citations on May 8th from 10:30-11:30am. Both sessions will be taught in the library's classroom on the main floor next to the Reference Desk.

Suggesting a book to read over spring break:  The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson. The library has four copies available for checkout at call number E185.6 .W685 2010 on the 2nd floor of the library in the Black Collection. Read brief exerpt of the review from Booklist below:

Extended Hours for Mid-Term Exams, Spring Semester 2013.

From Monday, March 11, through Thursday, March 14, 2013,

the Library will open from 8:00 am to 2:00 am.

For your best shot at a group study room, sign up for a time slot at 8am. We have 4 undergraduate group study rooms that allow each group to have up to a two-hour time slot, and one graduate student group study room that allows the graduate student to study there for up to 3hrs. No back to back sessions allowed and it really is two hours per GROUP.

African American Read-In is Back!!!

Come join us on Tuesday, February 26th as we participate in the National African American Read-In. Read a book by an African American author for at least an hour, get a raffle ticket for prizes.  For every hour you read, another ticket...

Top prizes so far include a $500 book scholarship courtesy of Student Affairs, and a pair of MEAC basketball tickets from Athletics.

UPDATED --Revised Change in hours!!!
NOW, on Thursday, Dec. 13th, the library will close at 8pm! It will reopen on Friday at 8am til 5pm as usual with the exception of being closed for commencement.

Extended Hours coming for finals prep!

Extended Hours for Exams, December 2012.

The Library will extend the opening hours for an additional two hours on the following dates: 

Monday, December 3 through Thursday, December 6,

and, from Monday, December 10 through Thursday, December 13, the library will be open from 8:00 am to 2:00 am.

On Sunday, December 9, the library will open from 1:00 pm to 12:00 am.

Opening hours for Friday, December 7, are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; and Saturday, December 8, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Science Direct database to have service improvements -- possible minor disruptions...

We are keen on making our users' experience with ScienceDirect and Scopus as smooth, friendly, and effective as possible. Based on user feedback we plan new releases to further improve our products.

The next release is scheduled for Saturday, December 1, 2012 EST, and will extend our full internet browser coverage to include Google Chrome and Safari. During this scheduled maintenance, there may be minor disruptions to some ScienceDirect and Scopus functionality.

In addition to our almost 50 desktop computers, we have up to 30 laptops that can be checked out for use in the library. There is Wi-fi and three WEPA stations in the library as well.

Even better -- helpful librarians and staff trained to get you to the right resources you need right away! Online or off-line.
